El Tharrats de Dau al Set

Mayoral presents in Verdú the exhibition of  Joan-Josep Tharrats, founder of Dau al Set movement. Curated by Joan Tharrats i Ral, the artist’s son and held by Tharrats Foundation and in collaboration of Arnau Puig, philosopher, art critic and last surviving member of the Dau al Set group and artistic movement.

This accurate selection features 15 artworks, including: drawings, paintings and the “maculaturas”.

Influenced by artists like Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian and Paul Klee he was also revolutionary and created a new artistic procedure called “Maculaturas”. The name has its origin on the product itself, the sheet jammed between the rollers of the press and spotted by successive inked. Tharrats was fascinated by the stains resulting of the accidental printing process and he started to do some experimental procedures obtaining excellent results. His artwork started to be based on the mixture of monotypes, overprinting’s, gluing’s and manual painting and become internationally well known.

Some of the artists he knew along his life were Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Antonio Saura, Joan Miró; he admired them all.

In 1960 he participated in the exhibition New Spanish Painting and Sculptures at the Museum of Modern Art of New York, and at this time he was considered “the most intellectual… head-long Expressionist, astral, destructive order” (words by Frank O’hara, director of the exhibition at the MoMA).
