Long live painting!

Curated by David Lomas

Modern art is sometimes viewed as a relay race in which each artist sprints at most a lap or two before passing the baton on to the next runner. What the small but choice selection of works in this exhibition shows is that many of the great modern artists kept on running, their lives and careers in some cases spanning much of the twentieth century. It is hard to imagine that painting in our day would be as rich and vibrantly alive (again belying pronouncements of the ‘end of painting’) were it not for the persistence of these heroic forebears.
